          Early Life and Education

          Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery was born in Hasselt, Belgium, on August 3, 1866, into an aristocratic family.

          He pursued an engineering degree at the École polytechnique in Brussels.

          Naval Career

          Gerlache deviated from his family's expectations and joined the Belgian Navy in 1886. He completed officer training in Ostend and served on the hydrographic ship "Belgica." In 1890, he was promoted to lieutenant.

          Polar Expeditions

          Gerlache developed a keen interest in polar exploration.
